Cover letter guide for Tanzania hospitality job seekers

How to Write a Cover Letter for a Job Application in Tanzania

A useful cover letter answers three things quickly: which job you want, what relevant work you have done, and why the employer should read your CV. Keep it specific to the property and role, then let the CV carry the full work history.

Start with the role

A cover letter is a short explanation of fit

A cover letter should add context to your application, not repeat your CV line by line. Name the exact position and employer, then connect one or two parts of your experience to the work described in the listing.

For a front office role, that might be guest communication, reservations, shift handovers, or handling requests. For a lodge or safari role, it might be guest care, route knowledge, languages, logistics, or the ability to work within the schedule described by the employer. Use only details you can explain honestly.

  • Use the job title from the listing when it matches the role you want.
  • Name the employer or property exactly as it appears in the source.
  • Choose evidence that belongs to the department, setting, and level of the job.
  • Keep the tone direct and respectful. Avoid claims such as best candidate unless you can support them with relevant evidence.

Use a clear shape

What to put in each paragraph

The opening paragraph should identify the role and your reason for applying. The middle paragraph should show the most relevant work or training. A final paragraph should point the reader to your CV and state how they can contact you.

You do not need a long introduction about your life. The reader needs to understand the application before deciding whether to continue.

  • Opening: state the role, where you found it, and your current or most relevant experience.
  • Evidence: describe one or two responsibilities that match the listing, such as check-ins, breakfast service, room standards, bookings, guiding, or guest communication.
  • Practical fit: mention location, availability, language, certificate, or relocation information only when it helps this application.
  • Close: name the attached CV and any other requested documents, then give a reliable contact route.

A simple starting point

Use a template, then replace every bracket

A template can help you start, but it should not remain generic. Replace each bracket with a real detail from the job and your experience. Remove any line that does not fit the role or that you cannot support.

For example, a candidate applying for a guest-service position could connect their experience handling arrivals, booking questions, and shift handovers to the employer's need for clear guest communication. A kitchen candidate could name the section and service they have actually worked in instead of listing every food-related task.

  • Subject: Application for [exact job title]
  • Dear [hiring manager or hiring team],
  • I am applying for the [exact job title] position at [employer]. My experience in [relevant setting or department] includes [specific responsibility that matches the listing].
  • In my recent work or training, I [describe a real task, service, or responsibility]. I can also offer [relevant language, certificate, availability, or location detail when applicable].
  • I have attached my CV and [other requested document]. Thank you for reviewing my application. I can be reached at [phone number] or [email address].
  • Kind regards, [full name]

Send it correctly

Follow the employer's application instructions

Some employers ask for a cover letter as a separate file. Others ask for the letter in the email body or in an application form. Read the listing and use the format requested. If no format is specified, a short email message with the cover letter in the body and a clear PDF CV is usually easier to open than several unexplained files.

Check the address, subject line, role title, and attachment names before you send. Do not copy an old employer name into a new letter.

  • Use a clear filename such as your name and the role, not a sequence of drafts.
  • Check that the employer name, property, location, and role are correct.
  • Attach only the documents requested or clearly relevant to the application.
  • Save the sent version so you know what the employer received.

Final check

Cut the lines that could belong to any applicant

Read the letter once as the employer. Could the same message be sent to a restaurant, lodge, city hotel, and tour company without changing a word? If so, add one accurate detail from the role or remove the general claim.

Keep the final version easy to scan. Two or three short paragraphs can be enough when each one earns its place. Correct spelling, a clear contact number, and an accurate attachment matter more than decorative language.

  • Remove repeated adjectives such as hardworking, passionate, and dynamic when no example follows.
  • Check the spelling of the employer, property, role, and location.
  • Make sure the contact details in the letter match the CV.
  • Read the final file on a phone before sending it.

Common questions

Questions worth answering before you apply

Do I need a cover letter for every job application in Tanzania?

Follow the employer's instructions. If a cover letter is requested, send one that is specific to the role. If it is not requested, a short and useful application message may be enough.

How long should a hospitality cover letter be?

Keep it short enough to read quickly, usually a few focused paragraphs. Include the role, relevant evidence, practical fit when useful, and the documents or contact route the employer asked for.

What should I write in a cover letter with no hotel experience?

Use related work or training without changing its meaning. Customer service, food handling, cleaning, sales, events, bookings, driving, languages, and teamwork can be relevant when you explain the actual responsibility.

Should I send a cover letter as a PDF or in the email?

Use the format in the job instructions. When the employer does not specify, keep the message easy to open and label any attachment clearly so the recipient knows what it contains.
