Core skills

Understand the working behaviour behind each skill

A Barista prepares coffee and other hot or cold drinks while keeping the coffee station organised for service. Depending on the property, the role may include grinding or dosing coffee, steaming milk, following drink specifications, taking orders, handling simple food items, cleaning equipment, and telling the next shift what needs attention.

  • Coffee preparation that follows the available recipe, grind, dose, milk, cup, temperature, or presentation instruction.
  • Careful use and cleaning of the espresso machine, grinder, steam wand, utensils, surfaces, and storage area.
  • Order accuracy and clear questions when a guest changes a drink, asks about an ingredient, or needs a different option.
  • Station organisation that keeps cups, milk, coffee, food items, tickets, charges, and collection points easy to track.
  • Practical communication with guests, waiters, kitchen staff, supervisors, suppliers, and the next shift.

Evidence

Show the skill instead of only naming it

Use only experience, training, documents, and results you can explain and support. A focused application is stronger than an inflated one.

  • A coffee-station opening or cleaning checklist, preparation record, stock note, or anonymised order example you completed.
  • A specific example of managing a queue, drink change, equipment concern, or busy breakfast or event coffee service.
  • A supervisor reference that can describe your coffee preparation, station care, guest communication, or handover work.
  • Relevant barista, beverage service, food hygiene, customer care, or equipment training, if completed.

Learning plan

Choose training that closes a real gap

Read several vacancies for the role and note the requirements that repeat. Separate mandatory requirements, preferred experience, and skills that can be learned on the job before paying for a course.

  • Barista practice may cover espresso preparation, grinding, dosing, milk steaming, menu reading, cleaning, and station setup.
  • Food hygiene, clean equipment handling, customer service, and careful ingredient communication may be requested by some properties.
  • POS, stock records, basic equipment care, or beverage-service training may help when the vacancy names those tasks.

Next level

Connect current skills with the next progression step

A job title can mean different things at different properties. Use the published responsibilities and requirements as the final guide for each application.

  • A Barista may progress to Senior Barista or Coffee Station Lead work as responsibility for preparation and service grows.
  • Experience with guests, menus, stock, and team coordination can support a Restaurant or Beverage Supervisor path.
  • Broader drinks and service experience may lead toward Bar Manager or Food and Beverage Manager work when the vacancy fits.
