Core skills

Understand the working behaviour behind each skill

An HVAC and refrigeration technician diagnoses, services, and records work on air conditioning, ventilation, cold rooms, freezers, ice equipment, and other temperature-control systems used in hospitality. The role combines electrical, mechanical, airflow, drainage, and temperature checks, while refrigerant or specialist work stays within the technician's training, authorization, and the vacancy's stated scope.

  • HVAC diagnosis that combines temperature, airflow, power, controls, drainage, noise, equipment history, and visible condition to narrow the fault.
  • Safe electrical and mechanical isolation, equipment access, tool use, and protection of guests, food, stored products, and occupied areas.
  • Preventive servicing for filters, coils, drains, connections, controls, seals, temperature checks, and other tasks named by the property or vacancy.
  • Accurate recording of readings, set points, symptoms, parts, actions, tests, and conditions that still need specialist attention from the next technician or supervisor.
  • Judgement to stop and escalate when work involves refrigerant handling, pressure, unfamiliar controls, unsafe equipment, or authorization outside your actual training.

Evidence

Show the skill instead of only naming it

Use only experience, training, documents, and results you can explain and support. A focused application is stronger than an inflated one.

  • A redacted HVAC or refrigeration work order, temperature log, service checklist, or maintenance record showing symptoms, readings, action, testing, and handover.
  • A supervisor reference describing your diagnosis, preventive service, equipment care, documentation, and response when cooling or refrigeration affected guests or operations.
  • A specific example of tracing poor cooling, an icing issue, a blocked drain, a cold-room temperature change, or a repeat fault and escalating appropriately.
  • HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, safety, or equipment training and authorization evidence only when completed and relevant to the vacancy's stated duties.

Learning plan

Choose training that closes a real gap

Read several vacancies for the role and note the requirements that repeat. Separate mandatory requirements, preferred experience, and skills that can be learned on the job before paying for a course.

  • A property induction may cover room access, plant rooms, cold storage, temperature records, food protection, work orders, isolation control, emergency contacts, and contractor handovers.
  • Refrigerant, pressure, electrical, or specialist HVAC work may require specific training, supervision, licences, or employer authorization, so applicants should state only the scope they hold.
  • Refreshers in airflow checks, temperature recording, filter and coil servicing, controls, safe tools, and incident reporting can support duties when the property provides or requests them.

Next level

Connect current skills with the next progression step

A job title can mean different things at different properties. Use the published responsibilities and requirements as the final guide for each application.

  • HVAC and refrigeration experience can lead towards maintenance supervisor, refrigeration specialist, facilities coordination, or another engineering role when the next vacancy matches.
  • A technician who keeps accurate temperature and service records may take responsibility for planned cooling work, a property area, or a shift handover.
  • Further experience with controls, cold rooms, kitchen equipment, ventilation, or building systems can support a specialist path when training and authorization requirements are met.
